Thoughtful Thursday

I don't know if you are aware of it, but a certain singer/songwriter/artist/awesome Canadian known as Leonard Cohen is a bit of a big deal around these here parts.

A national treasure, our Leonard. A Renaissance man.

Not only did he have a much-talked about gallery showing here recently, he also had a critically-acclaimed concert. The press loves him. He's friendly, aloof, mysterious, open.

And he writes some pretty amazing lyrics.

I noticed in today's paper than one of his musical associates, Jennifer Warnes, is going to be coming here. She and he have a real mutual musical admiration society going on.

The irksome advertisement for the event is what caught my eye - "First Lenny, now Jenny!".

Ack.

This so does not befit such fine artists.

To somehow make up for this, today's Thoughtful Thursday will be an exquisite collaboration of the two - lyrics by Lenny!

Vocals by Jenny!

Bird on a Wire
Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

Like a fish on a hook,
like a knight from an old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee.

If I have been unkind,
I hope that you could just let it go by.
And if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you. No, no

Like a baby, stillborn,
like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.

But I swear by this song
By all I have done wrong
I'll make it all up to you. Yes I will

I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
He called out to me, "Don't ask for so much."
And a young man leaning on his darkened door,
He cried out to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"

Like a bird on the wire,
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

May you all have a fine day, straddling that balance between not asking for enough and asking for too much.

Wow...

...you rule my world on so many levels. Jeez, "Bird On A Wire" was one of my mom's favorite songs (though I'm more "Everybody Knows" type of person) and the Dell Shannon book is literally the only book that I've read this week (still on "The Root Of Evil").

Count Cormac: This is kind of freaky.

But in a good way, I'm sure.

I can't even rule my dog's world - how could I possibly effect something so much higher up the evolutionary scale? Funny.

Hey Baroness! I've been a negligent blogger and reader, but am trying to caught up and back into the groove. Anyway, had to stop by to say hello.

Years ago, I rented an apartment from a guy named Len Cohen. Am quite sure, however, that he didn't have much of a global following -- especially considering his Philadelphia fan club likely had only 1 member.

Alrighty, hope all is well. Miss ya, babspeapod

Just slap the IGNORANT sign right on my forehead...I have never heard of the artists or the song.

Sad life I lead.

Really.

Miss you, BTW! Why do I keep missing your posts?

So, I entered the Georgia Straight contest to win tickets to the Jennifer Warnes concert...maybe we will get to go after all.

Babs, Darling!: Hello right back, sweetness! No judgements here. Unless I'm judging myself. Maybe your Mr. Cohen was Leonard's less successful sibling. Stranger things have been known to happen!

Countess Tracey: I find that a lot of Canadian musicians, regardless of talent, never manage to break into certain US markets. I'm sure there are some regional people that you love that I've never heard of, too!

Countess Rachel: I'm afraid that I'm not going to rely on the alignment of the planets and your lucky rabbit's foot for this one; I'm getting tickets.

And I forgot to mention, my fave Cohen song is "Anthem" "There is a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in..."

and I want to know what a "brumsh" is - I love verification words!
