Thoughtful Thursday

Greetings, dear readers! I'm back today, with a little more sleep under my belt, far less cranky than yesterday, and rarin' to start the day anew and refreshed. Today's little jaunt to the library reminded The Baroness of one of her favorite quotes. What I love even more is that these bon mots are artfully embedded into the floor directly inside the entrance to the library, to remind one and all who enter there the joy and merriment to be found in literature:

Outside a dog, a book is man's best friend.
Inside a dog, it's too dark to read.
Groucho Marx

Enjoy your Thursday - may you have the opportunity today to spend at least 15 minutes curled up with a good read.

As an aside - what are you reading?

Reading Rashi's Daughters Book 2 - Miriam by Maggie Anton
Full of lots of good Talmudic study and wisdom and funky medieval sex.

I plan on posting this weekend about my book-buying addiction. I just finished The Memory Keeper's Daugher (excellent read), and have just started Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, which I am enjoying.

Countess Rachel: Is there any other kind of medieval sex but funky? I remember that one (k)night....

Countess Sandi: I look forward to your weekend post. I, too, will admit to a book addiction. I'm one of the few people I know who can go in to Costco for 1 singular item, but put me in a bookstore - look out! We're gonna need a bigger cart...

I'm ashamed to say it's been since Christmas time that I've read a book in full. The last book I read was THE LAST MADAM: A LIFE IN THE NEW ORLEANS UNDERGROUND by Chris Wiltz. I have been off and on again reading WIDOWS. A book about the KGB and the CIA and spies on both sides with questioning deaths. P just got me a book on French Bulldogs (Frenchies) because we're thinking of getting one.

Countess SRU: Don't be ashamed - when life gets in the way, reading always seems to be the first thing out the window...Aren't you planning a wedding? Who has time to read? Maybe on the honeymoon...BTW, we, too, have looked into a frenchie as a pet for our pug. Just hard to find a reputable Canadian breeder.

Countess Deb: I must be the only woman on earth not to have read this book yet. I will get me to a bookstore, posthaste!

Countess Stacy: I have read the Tipping Point by Gladwell; my hubby read Blink and loved it. Suggestions - The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls,
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert( kind of obvious), Love Over Scotland (either part 3 or 4 of a great series) by Alexander McCall Smith, Look Me in the Eye by John Robinson (Augusten Burrow's older brother). I am also enjoying a collection of essays about the yogi BKS Iyengar, and just finished Roccoco by Adrianna Trigianni. Her Stone Gap quadrigy (is there even such a word? What comes after trilogy?) is just lovely and homey, and good for a tug at your heartstrings.

I just finished "Into the Wild", a great book -- although a sad story. It's about a Thoreau-esque young man who set his dreams on a vagabond life and perished in midst of his great Alaskan adventure.

Am still 100-pages from the end of "Atonement" ... what can I say, it sucks! ... Barbra Peapod

Countess Lisa: I've heard the movie (which I still haven't seen yet - argh)is very true to the book. I'll add them both to my "to do" pile. One of my friends loved it so much she won't let her free-spirited teen watch it, for fear he'll embrace the call of the wild.

I'm going to "borrow" that Groucho quote, if you don't mind.

Count WP: I most certainly do not mind - it is ours to share. (At least I think so - there's no existing Marx Brothers left to share royalties with, are there?)
