How is it Possible?

How is it possible?

That even after fasting for the day yesterday, I gained weight?

That even after fasting for the day yesterday, then having a healthy meal, I gained weight?

That even after fasting for the day yesterday, then having a healthy meal THEN kickin' it on the treadmill, I gained weight?

Sh*t.

The human body is a complicated thing, people. Sometimes all the questioning in the world won't change what is. Numbers don't lie (but the Baroness will, if you ask).

Me thinks that, in order to find illumination, some retail therapy is in order.

(Nah, not really. I just want to go shopping)

To all of my fellow Canadians, I wish you a Happy Gobble Day this weekend.

May the 2 pounds of mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie sit like a delicate flower petal in your tummy, and may the tryptophan lull you into a delicious turkey trance.

May your gathering of your clan, be it large or small, be soul-nourishing and laughter-filled.

And may we all not care whether weight is gained. It's so not worth the time thinking about it.

Eat, drink, and be merry. Repeat as necessary.

Awww! It's your Thanksgiving! I hope yours is lovely.

I'm with you on the weight thing. Mine seems unchanging whether I work out and eat sensibly or say the heck with it and go to the pub. It makes you wonder why we work so hard to stay healthy if there are no obvious results!

Happy Holidays!

Countess AG: Mine is guaranteed lovely - Duke 1 home from school for the weekend, family party on Sunday.
It will be divine. Thanks for the well-wishing!!

If I cared about my weight I wouldn't look like I do. Um. Which is probably the problem. Dreaming about pumpkin pie for the last week probably doesn't help. Anyhoo, Happy Thanksgiving to you too! It sounds like you have a lot to be thankful for. I sure know I do.

It is complicated! You have to eat to lose weight. I don't get it.

And yet I eat and eat and eat, and don't lose weight. It's a mystery. ;)

Hey, Baroness. Me too! Nothing all day, soup and just a little bit of sorbetto and one piece of dark chocolate and boom! 2 pounds.
But the sun is shining, I'm off to Saltspring tonight and I don't give a ff about the less than a kilo. FYI, mashing potatoes raises their glycemic index rating or some such crap - so serve them lumpy...

Oh my goodness.
You don't understand how pumped I am for this weekend.
You're my hero for all the turkey.
HEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLSS yes.
Oh AND! how many pounds of turkey have you got? Thats WAY more important than how much you have gained.

Oh, by the way.
Who cares if you gained a little bit of weight, you look freaking awesome and nothing should take that away from you!

Oh boy, don't be a scale-aholic! Make yourself wait a week after starting a plan before you weigh yourself. Easier said than done, I know, but it's true. The body fluctuates in regard to fat, water, what have you, on a daily basis. Especially when we hit a certain age. :-)

Peace - D

Countess of Tea: Gratitude abounds in the vonB household!

Countess Maggie: C'mon, now. You may eat and eat and eat, but you follow this with running, running, running. I guess it's finding that perfect balance. Sigh.

I will look for this balance after turkey. It's futile right now!

Countess Rachel: Normally, I wouldn't give a ff either, but I was soo-o-o-o good (ok, pretty good). I even peeled off all of the tempura from my, er, veggies.
And edemame? Come ON. I thought that shit was supposed to be good for you.

Screw you, Dr. Oz!!

Countess Schmee: I'm excited you're excited. Don't forget about the brownies you asked for! They're waiting for you.

As for turkey size, it's gonna be about 25 lbs (for 14 people). I likee those odds. Urp.

Countess D: It's not really me who's the scale-a-holic - it's the people at the clinic who weigh me 3 times a week. That I pay handsomely. It somehow makes me think that I should be paying at least a little attention...

Countess NATUI: Rest assured, I'll be dipping into the forbidden garlic mashed taters and homemade cranberry sauce. I just won't go crazy. Just a wee taste...

The cause of the increased weight is not weight at all, it's your wonderful aura.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Count Cormac: You say the nicest things!

I guess I better tell my "aura" to lighten up...

Happy Thanksgiving! And I totally understand the weight thing. I don't like that part.

Happy Turkey Day, Baroness. I hope you are serving sweet potatoes with the little marshmellows on top and the ever classic green bean casserol and mashed potatoes and gravy and I think I better go eat something...and as far as your fasting and gain weight maybe you were just retaining some poo. You know I wish I was there for Thanksgiving Fest.

This is a very frustrating phenomenon. That crazy little book "The Secret" talks about how when we think of losing weight, we often gain weight, to illustrate the power of the "law of attraction". I'm not saying I believe it - just saying it IS something that happens to many of us.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm sure you look gorgeous!

Countess MPM: Thanks for the turkey-licious wishes.

Countess of YickYack: I could never make such Ammurr-kan, er, "delicacies" like you, so I don't even bother. I leave this in the hands of marshmallow professionals such as yourself. Too bad you won't be here for "Thanksgivingfest" - we'll have some meat in your honor.

Countess Mathematique: Well, you know what? Here's another secret - I DO look gorgeous (to me)!!

As for the intention behind the wildly successful book, it is a fascinating concept, and makes quite a bit of sense. Thanks for bringing this up - it bears thinking about.

Hang in there, kiddo. And stay away from the cranberry sauce . . .

When we fast, our bodies compensate by slowing down our rate of metabolism. Survival instinct, if memory serves. Either that or it's G-d's way of telling us who's in charge.

Either way, weight and health aren't day-to-day things, anyway. They evolve over time, and long-term trendlines matter more than daily fluctuations.

Hope you're having a restful TG, too. We're shuttling kids from one playdate to another. Fun!

It happens. I think God is playing tricks on us and laughing it up in heaven. I exercised more than usual and stayed the same weight as the week before. Who knows? Think health, not weight!
